Ingredients
- 1 pkg quick acting yeast
- 2 Tbsp lukewarm water
- 1 cup milk
- 2 Tbsp sugar
- 2 tsp salt
- 1 Tbsp shortening
- 1 cup water
- 6 cups sifted all-purpose flour
Directions
- Thoroughly dissolve yeast in lukewarm water
- Scald milk
- Add sugar salt and shortening; stir until dissolved
- Add water; cool to lukewarm
- Add yeast
- Gradually add flour mixing to smooth stiff dough
- Knead on lightly floured board until smooth and satiny.
- Shape into ball; place in greased bowl. Cover; let rise in warm place until double in bulk.
- Knead; divide in half
- Shape each half into ball; cover; let stand 10-15 minutes
- Mold each half into loaf; place in greased 8.5"x4.5"x2.5" loaf pans.
- Cover; let rise in warm place until double in bulk
- Bake in moderately hot oven, 400F, 40-45 minutes
- Remove from pans; cool on wire rack
- Makes 2 1-pound loafs
